Konoba is a traditional old-style Dalmatian restaurant. The word “konoba” actually means a “cellar”, and that’s approximately what the interior of any konoba looks like: rough, rustic, cozy and home-like. So is the atmosphere. Which is quite romantic..and appetite awakening, we’d say :).
When you are in a strange country choosing a meal in the menu, you are usually at a loss – a bit or a lot, depending on how strange the local cuisine is.
So here is our subjective TOP-5 rating to help you out – we think, you MUST try these meals at least once in Dalmatia*. *Please, note that the opinion is that of a local which once was just a tourist here.
- Pašticada sa njokima (pashtitsada with gnocchi).
This is extremely soft and juicy beef that’s been marinated in a thick sweet and sour sauce for a day before being cooked and served to you with soft little dumplings.
If it’s not in the main menu, ask for it – it might be part of the day-time offer.
- Škampi na buzaru (large shrimps in tomato-garlic sauce).
Mmm…you won’t get too full from this dish (a serving includes only 4-5 shrimps) but do ask for some extra bread as you would want to pick up every little drop of the fantastic, picante-ish sauce on the plate.
- Crni rižoto (black risotto).
This one is cooked from cuttlefish and served with parmesan. Delicious!
- Zagrebački odrezak (veal escalope in Zagreb style).
The soft and juicy veal is filled with cheese and ham and served with french fries, salad and tartar. Mmm, try it once and it has good chances to become one of your favourites!
- Ćevapi (chevapi).
Ćevapi or ćevapčići are grilled minced-meat sausages which come in or together with a special homemade round bread (lepinja) or french fries, pieces of onion and ajvar (pepper-based condiment). Sometimes ajvar is replaced with kaymak (a creamy, slightly salty dairy product). Our advice is to ask for both ajvar and kaymak to see which combination tastes best for you!
To sum it up, konoba’s meals are quite simple, abundant, tasty and filling. Inviting to relax, have fun and a good laugh with friends.
Beyond the rating are some classic festive delicacies which Dalmatians usually have for weddings, big celebrations and other important occasions. Janjetina sa ražnja (barbecued lamb) and hobotnica ispod peke s pečenim mladim krumpirom (baked octopus with young potatoes) are the greatest hits which are expensive at restaurants and are probably the best when made by hospitable hosts in outdoor fireplaces near the house / apartment you are renting.
Enjoy your time in Croatia!
